CMHP Executive Members attend Diversity Rx Conference

Over 1,000 health care providers, policymakers, researchers, and advocates converged in Oakland, California on March 11 – 14, to attend DiversityRx, the National Conference on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations.  The mission of DiversityRx is to improve the accessibility and quality of health care for minority, immigrant, and indigenous communities.  Held every two years, the conference facilitates the exchange of knowledge towards eliminating health disparities through presentations, workshops, and professional development activities.

Participants were provided the opportunity to gain insight into a wide array of topics such as immigrant and migrant health, transgender and LGBT issues, CLAS standards and new community education models, trends in patient engagement, and the impact of unconscious bias on health outcomes.

CMHP’s Awareness and Outreach committee members Rasy Mar and Stacey Brown and CMHP Secretary Maritza Bond participated in the three day conference.  Rasy and Stacy  were conference presenters sharing their work with Connecticut’s Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese communities entitled:  “Let’s Work Together: a Community-Campus Collaboration to Explore Southeast Asian Health Beliefs and Practices.

Additionally, the two CMHP members provided a poster presentation on “Enhancing Communication in Cross-Cultural Settings” curriculum program.  The curriculum program collaborated with community partners program for third year medical students, which focuses on improving communication skills with a diverse patient population.  The unique curriculum includes: didactic, clinical skills practice, and small group debriefing sessions for participants.

“Overall the conference was fantastic, with great learning opportunities.  I can say without hesitation and without overemphasis that attending Diversity was beneficial and skill building for me,” said Brown.
